Heat pumps carry two efficiency ratings because they do two jobs. SEER2 describes cooling efficiency over a season, the same measure used for air conditioners. HSPF2 describes heating efficiency, and it is the number to look at if winter running cost is your concern.
A system can score well on one and unremarkably on the other, so compare both rather than the headline figure a brochure leads with.
A dual fuel setup pairs a heat pump with a gas or oil furnace on the same ductwork. The heat pump carries the mild and moderate weather that makes up most of a Pennsylvania heating season, and the furnace takes over when the temperature drops far enough that the furnace becomes the cheaper way to make heat.
The changeover point is a setting, and setting it correctly is part of the installation rather than an afterthought.
Heat pumps deliver heat at a lower supply temperature than a furnace, so they move more air for the same comfort. Ductwork that was adequate for a furnace can be marginal for a heat pump, which shows up as weak vents, noise, and rooms that never quite catch up.

Apply TodayYes. There is still heat in outdoor air well below freezing, and a heat pump collects it. What changes as it gets colder is how much heat the system can move per unit of electricity, which is why the coldest stretches are where a dual fuel arrangement or correctly configured auxiliary heat earns its place. Sizing and setup determine whether a heat pump feels adequate here, not the climate.
Because it is, and that is normal. A heat pump delivers a large volume of moderately warm air over a long cycle, while a furnace delivers a smaller volume of much hotter air in shorter bursts. The room ends up at the same temperature, but standing at a register feels different. If the air is genuinely cool rather than mildly warm, that is a fault and worth a service call.
Some frost on the outdoor coil in winter is expected, and the system runs a defrost cycle to clear it, which is where the occasional whoosh and burst of steam comes from. What is not normal is a thick shell of ice that never clears, or ice building on top of the unit. That points to a defrost control, sensor or refrigerant problem, and it should be looked at before it damages the coil.
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump. The difference is distribution: a ducted heat pump conditions the whole house through your existing duct system from one indoor unit, while a mini-split uses individual indoor units mounted in the rooms being served, with no ducts at all. If your home already has good ductwork, ducted is usually simpler. If it has none, ductless is the practical route.
More often than a system that only runs in one season. A heat pump operates in both heating and cooling mode, so it accumulates running hours far faster than an air conditioner, and it has components an air conditioner does not have, including the reversing valve and the defrost control. Servicing ahead of each season keeps both sides of its job working.
Usually, but it needs checking rather than assuming. Heat pumps move more air than a furnace does for the same amount of heating, so ducts that were adequate before can become a bottleneck. We measure airflow and inspect the duct system as part of the estimate, and if modifications are needed we tell you up front rather than after the equipment is in.
